There are many books on information security- from books that cover a broad spectrum to books on specific topics such as intrusion detection or firewalls. Many, if not most, of these books are written for those who are already in network administration or information security. For those who need the information in plain English- these top picks should help.

1. Have You Locked The Castle Gate?

The more home and small office users migrate to broadband Internet connections, the more at risk they are for being hacked or exploited. It is imperative to protect and secure these systems. This book tries to provide an introduction for the security novice in terms they can understand. All users on the Internet have an obligation to secure their computers and a book like this one is a good start.

2. Inside Internet Security

Jeff Crume brings almost two decades of experience to writing Inside Internet Security: What Hackers Don't Want You to Know. I like the style of the book- it is written in plain English that is fairly easy to get through. The book introduces many of the fundamentals of information security in a format a reader can get through pretty quickly.

3. Safe and Secure

The book is comprehensive in its coverage of how to secure a home computer or network and in discussing everything from viruses to telecommuting to disaster recovery. Fundamentally the book is sound and if it were still 2001 I might have given it more than 4 stars. The core information on the basics of security are explained well and are easily understood.

4. Essential Computer Security

A plain-English manual from Tony Bradley, your About.com Guide to Internet / Network Security. This book takes seemingly complex subjects such as wireless network security, firewalls, email security and web security and translates them into terms that the average or novice user can understand and apply.

5. How To Do Everything to Fight Spam, Viruses, Pop-Ups & Spyware

An excellent guide for readers that want to understand the threats to their computer or network and learn some tips and techniques to apply to protect their PC from malware such as spyware and viruses.
