Experts at SophosLabsTM, Sophos's global network of virus, spyware and spam analysis centers, have welcomed the news that Canadian authorities have apprehended 17 people suspected of running the largest and most damaging hacker network ever discovered in the country.

IT security and control firm Sophos is warning computer users to be extra vigilant about any emails which claim to come from financial institutions, no matter how genuine the correspondence appears. The warning comes as customers of a small credit union, Kessler Federal, are being targeted with phishing emails that attempt to cash in on a phishing warning posted on the organisation's website, and entice worried customers to call a fake phone number to verify their details.

IT security and control firm Sophos has reminded computer users about the danger of internet scams following the arrest of ten people in Spain alleged to have defrauded victims via an email lottery scam.

A web poll of more than 350 computer users*, conducted by Sophos in the shadow of the discovery of the first financially motivated malware for Mac OS X, has revealed that 93% believe Apple Macintoshes will be targeted more in future. However, half of those polled said they did not believe the problem would be as great as that faced by users of Microsoft Windows.
